Abstract Quilombolas are ethnic-racial groups, of black ancestry, and had their territories consolidated in Brazil in regions with difficult access and far from large centers. The objective of this study is to know the therapeutic itinerary (IT) adopted by quilombola women in traditional communities located in the North of the state of Minas Gerais. This is a qualitative study with the theoretical model using the Arthur Kleinman health care system. The study scenario was 23 quilombola communities in northern Minas Gerais. Forty quilombola women aged between 25 and 89 years were interviewed. Data analysis was performed following the IT. Units of analysis emerged that were grouped into three categories: quilombola women and the meaning of health and care; the professional care system in quilombola communities; and route of care in situations experienced by women. The therapeutic itinerary of the communities is mainly related to the actions of popular medicine. It was also possible to observe that there are weaknesses in relation to health care due to factors such as difficulty of access to institutionalized services.

Objective: To determine the self-perception of nutritional status and cardiovascular risk (CVR) of ethnic groups in La Guajira, Colombia. Materials and methods: Descriptive-cross-sectional study in 233 adult individuals from urban areas in three municipalities of La Guajira. Self-perception of nutritional status, intention to engage in physical activity (PA), nutritional status, calculating body mass index (BMI) and cardiovascular risk through waist-hip index [Ci/Ca]) were evaluated, these were related to ethnic group (Afro-Colombian, indigenous and non-ethnic) and socioeconomic stratum (1, 2 and >3). Odd Ratios (OR) were calculated to determine the relationship between CVR and the rest of the variables. Results: 56.7% of the sample were women, 38.2% were Afro-Colombian, 32.2% were indigenous population. 65.2 % did not consider doing PA and 58.4 % presented a self-perception of their nutritional status as normal. It was also found that only 39.5 % had a normal BMI; 48.5 % had a high CVR. A high CVR was observed in Afro-Colombian (OR= 3.22; 95 % CI 1.3-7.8) and indigenous women (OR= 4.35; 95 % CI 1.7-10.9) compared to non-ethnic women (OR= 1, reference condition); likewise, a higher CVR in overweight and obese women and men (p < 0.05). Conclusions: there is a high prevalence of CVR in the population of La Guajira, especially in Afro-Colombian and indigenous women, with BMI being an indicator associated with CVR in them.

RESUMO

Objective:To investigate the relationship between histone deacetylase (HDAC) gene polymorphism and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Bai and Han populations in Dali of Yunnan province. Methods:A total of 148 patients with T2DM of Bai and Han nationalities who received treatment in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture People's Hospital from May 2019 to March 2021 were included in the T2DM group. An additional 100 healthy controls of Bai and Han nationalities who concurrently received physical examination in the same hospital from May 2019 to December 2020 were included in the normal control group. The susceptibility genes of T2DM were detected using the Taqman MGB probe method. The susceptibility gene loci were amplified using polymerase chain reaction. The whole sequence of susceptibility gene was sequenced. Results:There were no significant differences in the distribution frequencies of rs2530223 genotype, rs11741808 genotype, rs2547547 genotype, and rs1741981 genotype between Bai and Han populations (all P > 0.05). There was a significant difference in blood lipid level between four loci ( t = -1.06, -0.19, 0.39, -2.12, -2.04, 0.16, 1.47, < 0.01, -0.16, -3.17, -2.93, 0.69, -2.58, -2.33, all P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance between different states (all P < 0.05). The frequency distributions of each genotype and each allele did not differ significantly between healthy control people of Bai nationality and T2DM patients of Bai nationality and between healthy control people of Han nationality and T2DM patients of Han nationality (all P > 0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the polymorphism was not an independent risk factor for T2DM. Conclusion:The relationships between HDAC gene polymorphism and T2DM, obesity and dyslipidemia differ between Bai and Han populations.

Objective: To analyze the relationship between socio-labor conditions and health care in the face of COVID-19 among the farmworkers in two municipalities of Sonora, Mexico. Method: . Through semi-structured interviews and field observations, the care practices and health provisions implemented by the agricultural work centers were analyzed. Twenty-two interviews were conducted, 18 in the municipality of Hermosillo and 4 in San Miguel de Horcasitas. Results: Agricultural activities in Mexico did not cease and farmworkers continued their work in a diverse context of prevention measures. We found a disparity between the different productive units, which carried out protocols oriented to the care of the harvest to the detriment of human health. The means of agricultural transport lacked sufficient attention in terms of contagion prevention. The practice of payments in the localities without a sanitary protocol was evident. Conclusion: The intervention of the health authorities is necessary to homogenize the prevention protocols in the face of COVID-19. Socio-labor conditions are an obstacle to pandemic mitigation.

ABSTRACT Objectives To compare risk factors associated with diabetes mellitus in indigenous communities in four countries (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Chile), in the period 2010-2020. Methods The collection of information was carried out through consultation in different databases such as: SciELO, PubMed, Dialnet, LILACS, in Spanish, Portuguese and English; the selection of documents was carried out through a systematization matrix and the use of pre-established criteria. Results It was highlighted as personal factors to be an older adult, female sex, low level of schooling and unhealthy eating habits; within the cultural aspects the low adherence to conventional treatments and consumption of herbs and medicinal plants; regarding social aspects, migration, poor accessibility to health services and the lack of professionals who know cultural codes were related. Conclusion Each country has a predilection for a specific factor, however, there are similarities in terms of personal characteristics, nutritional habits, and cultural factors; the conjugation of these allows the disease to have a higher incidence in some countries compared to others; in addition, there is a significant change in factors that include aspects of the environment.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To interpret the cultural practices of health care and illness of elderly people descendants of Ukrainians. Method: Qualitative research developed with two family general informants and 22 elderly key informants, from August 2017 to March 2020, in a rural community, analyzed through domains, taxonomies and cultural theme. The cultural theme is based on the Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality. Results: Four cultural domains and taxonomies and a cultural theme emerged. In the cultural theme, the term "purity" represents the practices that can be maintained by the elderly, family and community. The term "hidden face of danger" are practices that require negotiations and restructuring, however, they occupy a valuable space for cultural preservation. Final considerations: The cultural practices of health care and illness of the elderly were shaped both by the culture of Ukrainian origin, as well as by the culture of their current belonging, the Brazilian one.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze reproductive autonomy in quilombola women and the intervening factors of intergenerational transmission between mothers and daughters. Method: a cross-sectional and analytical study developed with 160 women, mothers and daughters from quilombola communities in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, Bahia. The National Health Survey questionnaire was used to verify sociodemographic characteristics and intervening factors; and the Reproductive Autonomy Scale was also employed. The Chi-square, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests were applied. The data were analyzed by means of simple and multiple linear regression. Results: the group of mothers presented higher frequency of women that are married or live with a partner (66.2%), who worked (51.2%) and who had higher incomes (358.00 ± 663.00). The daughters presented more years of study (10.50 ± 5.00). Reproductive autonomy and intergenerational transmission between mothers and daughters mainly occur in the Absence of coercion (ICC=0.70; p=0368) and Communication (ICC=0.69; p=0694) domains. The mother's age (ß-adjusted=-0.027; p=0.039) and the daughter's skin color/race (ß-adjusted=0.423; p=0.049) were intervening factors in intergenerational transmission related to Decision-making, associated with the mother's age and with the daughter's self-recognition as black-skinned. Conclusion: the daughters do not follow the same choice as their mothers, which can be understood due to greater accessibility to reproductive planning services and increased schooling levels. Intergenerational transmission among quilombolas presents important specificities for reproductive decisions and enables a better understanding of the information and qualification of the health professionals' assistance in the care provided to these women.

Abstract: This article takes the racial stigma as an object of analysis, more precisely the symbolic construction that black people are dirty, stinky and/or filthy - a discussion that has been ignored in the Brazilian racial debate. In this sense, the aim is to discuss the racist production of bodies, senses and emotions. It is argued that, in a racist society, the processes of socialization and subjectivation are structured under a hygienist political-affective culture that reinforces white racial domination while subjectively subordinating, subjecting and sanitizing-whitening black people. Thus, there is an urgent need for greater articulation between the Psy field and Social Sciences to understand the interface between health, citizenship and the sociopolitical construction of ethnicity.

@#Introduction: Nursing education and training is known to be an inherently stressful experience and poses challenging demands for students. The aim of this study is to evaluate the stress levels among nursing students from different ethnic groups in Malaysia. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited the January to February 2020 nursing students from a private university in Malaysia with a self-administered questionnaire. Participants’ level of stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) developed by Sheu and colleague in 2002. Data collected were analyzed with, One-way ANOVA and Spearman analysis to determine the significant factors associated with stress. Results: Two hundred nursing students across years one to three enrolled. The mean monthly household (family) income was MYR4686.25 ± 4660.38. Stress was significantly associated with ethnicity and monthly household (family) income (p< 0.05). Bonferroni post-hoc test demonstrated that the mean stress level of Malay students is statistically significant compared to Chinese and Indian students (p< 0.001). The PSS determined the nursing students’ stress level to be moderate. Conclusion: The association of stress levels with ethnicity, and monthly household (family) income suggested the need for suitable cultural and sufficient financial support for nursing students to reduce their stress levels.

Abstract: Background: The diverse ways of ageing in Chile, especially determined by indigenous ethnic identity, are scarcely addressed. It is necessary to account for the personal, psychosocial and health variables that promote Successful Ageing (SA). Objective: This research explores a theoretical explanatory model of successful ageing (SA) in a sample of indigenous and non-indigenous older people, considering several personal, psychosocial and health variables related to SA. It also seeks to contrast the possible effect of ethnicity - being or not being indigenous - in this model. Method: Quantitative, cross-sectional study with the participation of 232 elderly Aymara people and 545 non-indigenous people living in the extreme north of Chile. Instruments and scales previously validated in equivalent population were used to measure successful aging, religiosity and spirituality, community social support, health problems, dependence in activities of daily living and depression. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to estimate the adjutsment of the theoretical model to the data. Specifically, a multigroup analysis was performed to adjust the model for indignous and non-indigenous groups. Results: The results indicate that there is invariance in function of ethnicity for the SA construct. As shown in the hypothesized and subsequently contrasted model, SA is directly related to depression and spirituality. On the other hand, community integration, physical dependence and perceived social support relates indirectly with SA, through the association with depression and spirituality. Conclusions: This study support the hypothesis that SA is a multidimensional process, determining by ethnicity and that mental health plays an important role.

Abstract This paper aimed to assess the factors related to the physical capacity of upper and lower limbs in quilombola older adults. This is a cross-sectional, analytic study performed with elderly residents in the quilombola community Caiana dos Crioulos, Alagoa Grande, Paraíba, Brazil. The researched dependent variables were the physical capacity of upper and lower limbs. It was performed the Spearman correlation and multiple and linear simple regression (95% CI; p<0.05). This work was performed per Resolution 466/2012 from National Health Council. Forty-three older adults were assessed. The bivariate analyses showed a positive correlation between handgrip strength (HGS) and physical activity (PA), between HGS and arm muscle circumference (AMC), and an inverse correlation between Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and age. The multiple-model for HGS was significantly correlated with age, AMC, and years of study (R2=0.374; p<0.05). Regarding the SPPB, it showed a significant correlation with age (R2=0.2524; p=0.001). Therefore, the muscle mass reserve, years of study, and age were factors related to the physical capacity among quilombola older adults. The strict compliance of these aspects and the early intervention can preserve physical capacity and ensure the productive inclusion and economic autonomy so much sought in the communities' social agenda.

Abstract Introduction. The Colombian Victims of Antipersonnel Mines Injuries registry was launched by the Colombian government with the objective of collecting information on all the cases of injuries caused by antipersonnel landmines in the country. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mortality disparities among ethnic minority victims of antipersonnel landmine injuries. Methods. A multivariate logistic regression was performed to examine the association between ethnic minorities and mortality in people injured by antipersonnel mines. Results. A total of 10,306 cases of injuries caused by antipersonnel landmines were registered, of which 430 were people belonging to minority ethnic groups (indigenous or Afro-descendant). Of these, 85 (19.7%) were women and 156 (36.2%) were under 18 years of age. Almost all people from ethnic minority groups were located in rural areas (n=427, 99.3%) and mortality was significantly higher compared to the mestizo population (mestizo 18.5% vs. individuals from ethnic minorities 29, 3%; p <0.001). After adjusting for sex, age group, active duty soldier status, rural area, and case volume for each geographic department, we found that ethnic minorities were more likely to die after suffering an antipersonnel mine injury (OR = 2.03; 95% CI 1.61-2.56; p <0.001). Discussion. We found an association between belonging to an ethnic minority and a higher probability of mortality with injuries caused by antipersonnel mines. These findings should encourage legislators in rural Colombia to work more diligently to reduce the harmful consequences of injuries caused by these devices in ethnic minority groups.
